The Donor Bill of Rights is a set of standards developed to ensure that nonprofit organizations and foundations conduct their fundraising activities transparent, responsibly, and ethically. These rights were jointly created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Non-Profits. The key points of the Donor Bill of Rights include:
To Be Informed of the Organization's Mission: Donors have the right to know the mission of the organizations they donate to, including how those organizations intend to use donated resources.
To Know the Identity of Those Serving on the Organization's Governing Board: Donors have the right to access information about the organization’s board members and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment.
To Have Access to the Organization's Most Recent Financial Statements: Donors should be provided with access to the organization's latest financial information.
To Be Assured Their Gifts Will Be Used for the Purposes for Which They Were Given: Donors have the right to be assured that their gifts will be used for their intended purposes.
To Receive Appropriate Acknowledgement and Recognition: Donors should receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition for their contributions.
To Be Assured That Information About Their Donations Is Handled with Respect and Confidentiality: Donors' privacy should be respected, and details of their donations should be handled confidentially to the extent provided by law.
To Expect That All Relationships with Individuals Representing Organizations of Interest Will Be Professional in Nature: Donors have the right to expect professional behavior from organizations they support.
To Be Informed Whether Those Seeking Donations Are Volunteers, Employees of the Organization, or Hired Solicitors: Donors have the right to know the status of those seeking donations, whether they are volunteers, employees, or hired solicitors.
To Have the Opportunity for Their Names to Be Deleted from Mailing Lists: If donors do not wish to be contacted in the future, they have the right to have their names removed from mailing lists.
To Feel Free to Ask Questions and Receive Prompt, Truthful, and Forthright Answers: Donors have the right to ask questions and receive direct and straightforward answers.
The Donor Bill of Rights serves as a guide to ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support.
